SUMMARY:Commerce and the Decorative Arts
DESCRIPTION:Registration required. \nThe Hammond-Harwood House\, a National Historic Landmark\, was built in 1774 and was the final work of architect William Buckland. The house is known for its decorative arts collection\, much of which was imported from England\, Europe\, and China and came by way of ship into various Maryland ports. The five part Anglo-Palladian mansion (derived from 16th century Italian architect Andrea Palladio) features some of the best woodcarving and plasterwork in America as well as a collection of fine and decorative arts. Portraits by Charles Willson Peale and several members of his family\, an outstanding collection of 18th century furniture created by Annapolis furniture maker John Shaw\, Chinese export porcelain\, and elegant English and American silver will be discussed in this presentation. \nLucinda Dukes Edinberg has served as the curator of the Hammond-Harwood House in Annapolis\, Maryland\, since 2022. She was formerly the art educator and collections manager for the Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s College until accepting the role of interim director. She has served as a guest curator\, designer\, and lecturer for the Daughters of the American Revolution\, Smithsonian\, Syracuse University\, Princeton\, Maryland Federation of Art\, and other institutions. Her recent exhibition\, Silver in the Golden Age of Annapolis\, featured the first exhibition of Annapolis made silver in the city of Annapolis. Other exhibitions have included In the Shadow of a Legacy: The Peale Women Painters\, Buckland and Palladio: A Legacy of Design; Knights\, Crooks and Heroes: Illustration in the Golden Age of American Illustration; A. Aubrey Bodine: Our Town; Pushing the Line: American Women Printmakers\, and many other exhibitions. Ms. Edinberg has taught in public and private schools and universities\, and currently teaches art history and architectural history at Anne Arundel Community College.

SUMMARY:Quilt Turning
DESCRIPTION:On the weekend of June 21/22 additional quilts will be on display at St. Paul’s Church\, 225 S. Morris St.\, Oxford. On Saturday\, June 21 from 10 am – Noon\, Kay Butler and Catherine Spence will conduct a quilt-turning program\, also known as a bed-turning. Bed-turning is a way to display quilts while telling their story. It originated long ago as a social event. A married woman might hold a bed-turning in her home among family members and friends. Quilts would be piled on top of each other on a bed. The hostess would then turn back each quilt\, one by one\, as she talked about each quilt.\nWe won’t have a bed\, but we will have a full stack of quilts\, and Kay and Catherine will explain each one as they are turned. This event is free to Oxford Museum members\, and $25 for non-members. Following the turning on Saturday\, the St. Paul’s exhibit will be open to the public from Noon-4 pm with free admission. Sunday the exhibit hours will be 10am – 4 pm with free admission.

SUMMARY:Oxford Cooperative Lab Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:For most Oxford and Talbot County residents\, the Cooperative Oxford Laboratory and its operation is a mystery. A new exhibit opening on August 10 at the Oxford Museum will provide answers to these questions and more. \nThe Oxford Lab was stablished by the U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries in 1960 for the primary purpose of investigating oyster diseases that had struck Chesapeake and Delaware Bays. In 1964\, the same year that the Oxford Museum began\, it moved into its permanent Oxford home. Located at the end of South Morris Street on the Tred Avon River\, the facility originally included 17\,000 square feet of laboratory and office space\, wet labs with flowing estuarine water\, an extensive library\, research vessels\, and quarantine facilities. Since 1964\, the lab and its staff of scientists has grown\, its mission has expanded\, and it has established partnerships with Maryland Department of Natural Resources\, the National Marine Fisheries Service\, NOAA and the US Coast Guard. \nScientific equipment\, archival materials and digital resources provided by the Lab will trace the story of the Lab’s founding and illustrate the range of important scientific research that has and is still taking place there. The exhibit will remain on view at the museum through October and will be supplemented by public programs led by Lab staff. \nThe Oxford Cooperative Lab exhibit will run August 10 through October at the Oxford Museum\, 101 S. Morris Street\, Oxford. Admission to the Museum is free of charge. Museum hours are Friday through Monday\, 10 am to 4 pm.
